How it Works
SystemAngel monitors elements by using industry standard protocols such as PerfMon, SNMP, HTTP, rstatd and Secure Shell (SSH). Using these protocols allows data collection to be done remotely without having to install software on the elements being monitored. From the simplest perspective, the software monitors IP addresses of your infrastructure to determine if services are running. More complex commands send notifications when database storage thresholds are exceeded or operating system CPU goes above a given percentage, for example.
All data collection is done from one central server called the Remote Service Monitor (RSM). The RSM collects performance data and then relays it to the Service Integration Portal (SIP), where end users can view the parameter data along with service level reports.
Monitoring Web transactions
Users configure the transactions to monitor using a point-and-click browser-based process called teaching. The user provides the starting URL for a transaction and then proceeds to click through the Web path using a standard Web browser. This process supports all types of dynamic HTML and there is no need for any type of scripting. Additionally, everything is done online and there is no software to install to record the transaction.
Alert thresholds and notification policies
Our clients are able to specify the thresholds for both alarms and warnings. Anytime these thresholds are exceeded, real-time alerts are sent via email, pager or SNMP trap. Customers may specify different notification and escalation policies, determining who receives notification and what types of alerts are sent.
Measuring against service level objectives
Customers may measure the performance and availability for both Web transactions and infrastructure elements against service level objectives. Customers specify both an availability goal and a time to repair goal. SystemAngel provides a set of service level graphs that show exactly how well these goals are being met.
Centralized Web access available to the whole organization
All reporting and configuration is accomplished online using the SIP, which is accessed through a standard Web browser. Anyone with a Web browser and network connection may view reports as well as configure thresholds and service level goals. Also, team members who only need to view reports can access them using a read-only login.
